Selamat Tengah Hari!!
I loved today even though it sort of was long!! It was all about networks and how these small groups of people make a big impact in society!
Today’s Itinerary and notes:
9am
- Visit to Pesticide Action Network (PAN)
12pm
- Lunch [Own arrangement]
3pm
- Visit to Consumer Association of Penang (CAP)
PAN:
- The importance of food sovereignty
- Doctors are not equipped to diagnose poisoning and usually misdiagnose patients for other things
- Pesticide spraying is usually handle by the most disadvantage person in the community: the woman. She is paid less than men and is able to be controlled more than men.
- chronic effects on the body usually effect women and children: reproductive health, cancer, babies born with severe handicaps, etc. This usually happens because mimi c imitates the natural hormones in the body.
- The gas that was used to kill humans in gas chambers is now used to kill pests on farms.
- Children born in contaminated areas from pesticides are severely disfigured and are not provided with the medicine that they need.
- The contamination usually have an inter-generation effect, meaning it is passed down in the future as if it became hereditary.
Consumer Association of Penang:
- Disparities so vast Global Health is not valid.
- You have to change your lifestyle to be one with nature
- Only self centered people consume without considering the consequences.
- You have to find the truth and publish to share the truth
- Health is a powerful tool!
- Consumer needs education in order to change their perspective in order to demolish myths and create alternatives about consumers.
- The most popular topics in magazines are health, money, and safety.
There seem to be a running theme: Companies always check researchers who expose them. They try to buy you out or threaten you to conceal the truth about their products effect on health.
Here are some random notes:
- Malaysia has great tasting food but it is unclear if it is healthy or not due to the food production techniques.
- Sweden was the first to use cell phones
- Tricoslan is similar to agent orange but is used in everyday items
- There is a possibility that deodorants can cause cancer
- Enforcement is difficult in Malaysia but then again, you rarely see any cops: coincidence?
